The focus should be in the fact that she displays emotions enough to suggest
she's a complete person now.

Hmm. It's an example of Misato trying to get Asuka to do something and instead
obtaining the opposite, I'd say. Nothing personal or Asuka-fan stuff here, just
the fact that in the end, the two are not that much conflictual. Asuka, until
some point, tries to reach for Rei (though her usual behavior is to immediately
retreat inside her spiky shell), and Rei tries to 'help' Asuka her own way to
see things clearly (waiting in the sunset during the Leliel accident, or in the
elevator scene (redone!) i episode 22. Besides, when the subject is of common
interest, they can have a short talk, see episode 19, in the medical ward.
