Yeah, sounds like he was just guessing.

Well, I agree that most Eva discussions are 1 part fact and 2 or 3 parts 
speculation, but that's basically the only way you can really discuss it, 
considering how little depth of information we really have about the series. 
  I don't agree, however, that these discussions are useless for series 
comprehension.  If participating in these discussions allows you to find a 
theory on a particular part of Eva you don't understand, or if they 
stimulate you to create your own theories, then I think the discussions have 
ultimately increased your comprehension and enjoyment of the series, even if 
your interpretation isn't based solely on canon.  Not to mention it's nice 
to have an intelligent discussion with people, even though it's about a set 
of fictional events.
