IMHO, the series end was rushed and made short on time and money. If it was
done properly, perhaps so many people wouldn't have rejected it and
generally gone "WTF?" at the end. You seem to suggest that EoE is
completely for the fans and has no real place in Anno's purpose. Although I
haven't seen it yet, from what I gather, it seems to show much clearer the
analysis of the self that you talk about. The last two episodes of the
series seem to drop everything else in favor of this self-analysis. There
is no information as to how Instrumentality really came about, and there is
really no information as to how it has changed anyone but Shinji. Even
then, Shinji's apparent change in the last episode is not necessarily enough
to convince, he's had his ups and downs before, and I can envision him going
back to his old self, the Instrumentality of the last episodes really having
very little affect on him in the long run. I do, however, appreciate the
in-depth poking, prodding, and exploring of the characters in the last two
episodes, because it is the type of exploration I've often put myself
through in my more depressed or thoughtful moments.

That, of course, doesn't mean that it can't. Some of the people who
subscribe to this ML also frequent japan.anime.evangelion, and occasionally
there are very convincing theories there with substantial supporting
evidence. Yes, sometimes people get very emotional, but that's the nature
of some people, I guess.
