Well, Anno said that Shinji was a "me" character. I wouldn't doubt that
Gendo is the antithesis of Shinji, still fucked up but in a far far darker
manner. While I don't know much about the actual production of the show, I
could easily see it playing out quite like Nerv, Gainex Branch as you
implied.
