It was released, in Japan, about a year ago (Dec 16th, 2000).
The US premiere was March 23rd, 2001 at the Cleveland Film Festival.

It was re-relased in April 2001 in Japan. I believe this was the
censored version.

It's popular as a cult film...
(And, there is not US distributor... fansub 'ethics' should apply :P)

Battle Royale is available all over eBay right now. They're all HK DVDs,
or VHS transfers from them.
I don't know how good the subs will be... haven't gotten around to
ordering the DVD from one of them yet...

Incidentally, Director Kinji Fukasaku is known to be a fan of Quentin
Tarrentino and John Woo. 
Sounds like fun combination ^_^;;;
