Which suggests that they wanted to emphasize that it wasn't real. I just 
don't see how it could be. It's completely out-of-character. I see it as a 
mixed up memory of that scene, changed by Shinji's POV.

And you can't dispute that wierdness seemed to focus around Shinji, 
Instrumentality or not.
