Evangelion *begs* for a Freudian analysis.
Freud's metaphors and symbols are at least as significant in Eva as
are the mish-mash of Caballah and Gnosticism, they're just not as
photogenic.
Anno was clearly inspired by Freud when he was making it: the flashed
text during Asuka's breakdown is almost tritely Freudian with its
conjoining of death and sex; Freudian terms (``the pleasure
principle'', ``thanatos'', ``separation anxiety'') pepper the titles,
particularly of the background music (my most Freudian-title-laden CDs
specifically state that while Sagisu composed the pieces, Anno named
them).
decently thought out? anyone who just ignores the fact that eva 01
is yui is on crack. i stopped reading after the first paragraph. =)
Stopping after the first paragraph makes it hard to know that he
ignored the fact that Eva 01 contains Yui, doesn't it?
I thought he talked about that some (at least her presence in Eva-01).
He *does* put more emphasis on the belief that Eva 01 is a construct
representing Shinji's wished-for body, but I don't think the
identification of Eva-01 and Yui is inconsistent with his view ---
his theory seems to be that Eva-01 is the potent body that Shinji
longs for to be able to protect his psyche from the vicissitudes of
life, and our mother is our *first* protector, after all...
