I attended Ani-Magic this past weekend where Manga premiered the dub of
Death and End of Evangelion. They were rough copies since the time code was
imprinted on the lower left corner of the screen. However, we never got to
see Sincerely Yours. As the credits for Air started rolling, the lights came
on and the Manga people took back their tapes. Apparently, some guy sitting
in the front row had a camcorder and was recording the dub. Once they caught
him, they shut down the screening. I asked Keith Burgess from Manga when the
movies would be released, and he told me they'd be out in March. Sheesh, the
would-be bootlegger couldn't even wait till March.
The dub was produced by Gaijin Productions, the Winn-Lees' production
company. The original actors who played major roles in the ADV dub had to
re-record their dialogue in Death. Apparently they couldn't just re-use
ADV's audio from the TV show. If I remember right, the only original actors
they couldn't find were the ones who played Kouzou, Makoto, Maya, Hikari,
and I think Kaworu, too. They had to re-cast those parts (interestingly,
Keith from Manga played Makoto). Before this, I had only seen a few dubbed
episodes, so I didn't watch the movies with any "great" interest. I already
own the LD box sets anyway, so I don't know if I'll even buy the Manga DVD.
P.S.
I've been having mail server problems, so I had to send this through the
newsgroup.
