I kinda got that feeling with ADV Films with their
slant on the Rurouni Kenshin OVA series.

But we don't want to start bagging the company now. 
Let's wait until it comes out (admittedly almost
another 10 months).  Hopefully it'll be great. 
Otherwise we can condemn it then  :P

I'd point out that changes have been made to the dub
before, eg in ADV Films' dub of episode one, the
reference to "0-9" and "oni".  And there may be more
subtle changes which are not noticed.  For example, I
think it's mentioned in one of the later liner notes
that throughout the series, Fuyutsuki never refers to
Shinji by his name, but refers to him as Ikari's son. 
I've never checked the dub, but I wonder if this
policy was maintained.

The fact of translation would itself already involve
some change in meaning.  But I think if you make a lot
of changes, particularly if intentional, there comes a
point where it's no long Eva (or at least no longer
Anno/GAiNAX's Eva, but instead Manga's version of
Eva).  Not that this particular change may be so
significant - depends on what it actually turns out to
be.

My understanding of part of the problem with that DVD
is that there's a better quality picture available on
the DVD already, but because they stuffed up the
encoding, that basically can't be accessed.  (Of
course, I doubt I'd notice much difference).

No, they're not.  But they're not that good either  :P

The thing is, once you've seen what R2 DVDs look like,
you start to wonder why R1 DVDs are noticeably poorer
in comparison?
