You have to look at this from the Director/Auteur's intention. Winn-Lee,
Grant, or whomever are all third parties who do *not* have the same ties
to Evangelion that the Japanese staff and cast do. Unless Anno (or even
Trsurumaki) sat down and said "Hey Manga Ent, we in Project Eva have
decided that we want "Kimouchi warui." to be changed to "I need a
vacation." Please reflect this change in your scripts." then having a
third party arbitrarily change the *original* dialogue for what they
think is "appropriate" is an extreme injustice to both Gainax/Anno and
the US audiences. As Bochan said, that is *incredibly* 'arrogant'.

Yes, but that is a video game. In the same game Shinji fights the MP
Evas in Eva-01 -- which I would agree is cool, but is not what Anno
wrote for the film and thus I don't expect Manga to hire out an
animation studio to make some scenes and splice in footage of that with
EoE.
There were rumors of Manga re-cutting DEATH to accommodate *all* of the
Dir. Cut footage from eps 21-24 (no such edit exists in Japanese). As
much as I'd like to see an official release of the footage I am
vehemently against that, unless Anno and/or his editor sat down and cut
it as they wanted (Evangelion:DEATH(really true)^3, anyone?) -- not as
Manga Ent. saw fit.

And by changing the line they change what Eva is. It's as simple as
that.
They have no right to make a decision like that. I have stuck by Manga's
side throughout the Wings of Honneamise fiasco (*nods at Peter* :P) and
have defended these Eva delays to the point that I have been personally
attacked as a Manga "Apologist". But making a change like this is beyond
defense - there is no rational explanation or excuse for doing it.
>They got consent from GAiNAX to change the line to their translation.
I don't see Gainax saying something like that. Gainax's position with
ADV was that once they sold the rights, the translations were out of
their hands.
I hope all of this is blown waaay out of proportion.
