I don't think we are the "whiny fans", at least on this matter.  First, I
don't agree that whiny fans "made" him make the movie End of Evangelion-I
don't think an artist is that easy to push around, and secondly, there is
no real evidence that Anno was pushed specifically by whiny fans to create
the movies.  Anno wanted to accomplish an ending to the Evangelion story
when he made those movies and "apparently wasn't satisfied with episodes 25
and 26."  (Hiroyuki Yamaga Interview book two part three of the eva manga).
Secondly, forcing Anno's work into a more "suitable" ending here, the way I
see it, would be Manga changing the "inappropriate" line, because they
didn't like the original ending.  Perhaps the change will not be that
great, or will be for the best...I am still suspicious.  If Anno wanted to
change his work, wouldn't he have done so in the video release of End of
Evangelion (he did make some slight alterations there, after all)?  Neon
Genesis Evangelion was one of the most important animes of the decade; if
we want to appreciate it as it is, we should avoid changing it as much as
possible, which doesn't sound like the intent of 'fixing' the last line.
