And I forgot to mention that voices are also rigorously selectied to match the role.
I think someone complained about the Maya VA's voice not matching the character -- in
Japan the voice selections are so good that when watching the Japanese voice-over of a
US TV program (ie: X-files, Star Treck, etc.), the Japanese voice fits the character
so well that in many cases the original actor/actress's voice sounds funny.
In addition, the vast majority of Japanese VAs have attended/graduated from voice
acting academies, and also take regular voice lessons and therapy.
