It depends, really. I never found it misleading because I, and many
others (particularly on this ML), never took the religious aspects of
Evangelion beyond face value because, well, when you did things got
waaaaay too murky and complex (and inconsistent) to be accurate (Occam's
razor :P). Most of the religion based theories that sprung up from
Evangelion are vague or irrelevant at best, and much was just made up
(The 4 Barons of Hell, for example. Try checking Usenet or any search
engine for *any* reference to these beings outside of Evangelion and
you'll receive nothing. Anno said the Evas were based on the Oni,
tradional Japanese devils). Anime (= Film) is a visual medium and as
such, "it's there because it looks cool" is a perfectly legitimate
philosophy, imho.
This further goes to show that "personal interpretation", in the bulk of
Evangelion at least, is just a fancy way to be wrong ^_^;
