Yes they added much. The extended scene of Armisael invading Unit 00 for 
example, and of the Lance hitting Arael's AT Field are cool as well as 
informative.

Most of it, like we find out that Unit 00 had a core. And the Kaji/Asuka 
scene on the ship's deck helps us understand some of her darker side ("Mou 
otona yo!"). Then there's the Kaworu/SEELE meeting, which raised the 
entirely *new* idea of Adam-Lilith duality, which definitely didn't clarify 
things. Y'know, this is why I wrote Daughter of Elysium ^_^.
