Since the whole Eva armor is supposed to actually be a restraint to control the
being, it could be speculated that the were part of the same device applied to
Adam during the Lance experiment (and previous ones), and since they are used to
keep Evas locked in place during rest, they may have served the same
movement-restrain purpose in that case too.

Besides, it was too-cool-not-to-do-it to make the Giant of Light look like an
Eva, at that stage of the series airing.
