To the best of my recollection, most the views I've
seen expressed on this ML have been closer/similar to
Oska Archer's (or perhaps they're just the more vocal
ones ^_^ ).
Normally I don't have a problem reconcilling

Perhaps the divergence between dialogue and visuals is
intended. There's the theme at the end of the TV
series that things are a matter of perception (though
this theme does not seem emphasised in EoE). So
perhaps Anno was attempting to underscore that point
by creating two endings portrayed differently: one
upbeat, the other ostensibly dark.

Okay :)
Though I perhaps I haven't followed this thread _that_
closely...

I don't want to start a dub vs sub thread (it's
probably prohibited by the list rules anyway), but as
a general dub-hater, I must say that felt that the
Japanese VA for Maya sounded kinda wooden in episode 1
as well. And some of the English VAs did OK in some
of the more dramatic scenes.

I think in EoE there's hope as well. Firstly, the
fact that Shinji chooses to return is itself hopeful.
Secondly, the hand of Asuka's which caresses his cheek
is about the greatest act of compassion we see towards
Shinji in the entire series.
