RCB is the Red Cross Book, which was the program sold at the theaters that
showed End of Evangelion in Japan. The entire contents were approved by
GAINAX, and so, with one exception (I think, can't remember, something that
was obviously contradicted and stated otherwise by GAINAX/Anno, somebody
help), is Evangelion canon.
For point 2...well, if it was that easy, it wouldn't be as fun. Seriously
though...the jury's still out on this one, and probably will be for a while. I
don't know if Sadamoto changed anything regarding Kaoru in the manga (well,
not really changed, since it came out first, but you know what I mean) or made
anything clearer. That might well be a point to examine.
And note, the relationship between Shinji and Kaoru doesn't have to have been
sexual in anyway. Men can love each other outside of a pure sexual sense, as
any two people can, I would dare say. Although Shinji and Kaoru developed this
very intense bond very quickly, matter of days (maybe hours?), one has to also
consider Shinji's fragile emotional state at the time. For him to be able to
become close to a person that understood him (unfortunatly for Shinji, to kill
him soon after), when he had been rejected by absolutly every person he knew
(except Yui, but that's kind of different), was very key to him. I would think
that Shinji could very quickly latch onto someone that didn't drive him away,
let alone try and connect with him as Kaoru did. Artful weakening of an AT
Field, if you will, but his is the real basis of Shinji's character, and the
part that makes the ending of the series make so much sense, and the end of
EOE to kind of not go with his character. To be able to exist happily with
other people is Shinji's ultimate want, though rarely verbalized.
I think...somebody else throw their two cents in on this one, kay~o?
