And if I may point something out, "That is why the first thing he did
after coming to his senses...". The "first thing he did".
Shinji has not been making graves (which by extension means the cross
got there some other way). Further, the 'coming to his senses' part
clearly indicates Shinji has just woken up there, most likely for the
first time since Third Impact concluded.
