The mechanism that this ML nutted out was that the properties of even a 
replica lance were such that Asuka felt total sympathetic feedback with the 
wounds Unit 02 suffered. A hole through the head would instantly have 
killed her, so she didn't actually receive the damage,  but she *felt* all 
the associated pain. From her point of view, she was bleeding profusely 
from her eye, but I doubt an outside observer would have seen the blood. 
Similarly with her arm - only from her POV was it sliced in half.
