This was akin to my thoughts after reading the post. Pre-TI Asuka would 
never react that way, which in my mind casts doubt on the genuineness of 
"Asuka on the beach". If the hands on the neck were a "reality check" the 
results weren't that reassuring. I was pretty sure that TI was over by the 
beach scene and that Asuka had undergone her own version of Complementation 
process and rejected it like Shinji, but now I am less certain.

However, I must admit that this explanation for the choking makes a lot more 
sense than my original take - I thought Shinji had just lost it. I think 
this is another blow to Asuka fans.
