The text is not meant to coincide with the death of Misato. It's much
more general than that. Almost an in retrospect note... "While fighting
the Angels together..." 
I don't see any contradiction.

I thought he was a fairly prominent role during Magokoro wo Kimi ni...
He 'did' things during that film. 
Entering Eva, seeing Eva-02, screaming, screaming, more screaming,
building sand castle, fighting with Asuka, talking to Rei and Kaworu...
