well, i always took it to be one (of many) signs of how obsessed she is with 
her position as an eva pilot. and how she draws self worth from it, etc. 
whereas for shinji it's a job, an onus, and he even pilots repeatedly 
wearing street (school) clothes, asuka continuously has part of her uniform 
with her all the time. i always just wondered how much those things cost and 
what if she broke one during PE. =)
