It's non-physical in the normal reality, because of the reversed ATField that
allows the Dirac Sea to exist and interface with said reality. Sort of a side
effect. Eva01 forced the reversed ATField (not difficult since from the other
side it was a non-reversed atfield, i.e. it "pushed away" like other ATFields)
open from the inside, so instead of coming out of the part that swallowed it it
came out from the part that, from Neo Tokyo 3 POV, was a 'side effect' of the
actual portal.
