Well. I think you're looking at this change with the point of view you've taken
for the anime, which is IMO unfitting since they are different. For one,
Sadamoto takes care of Shinji's reaction to Touji's death pretty well and in an
original way, and secondly, this happens to interlace with Kaji's background,
which I take the occasion to comment upon based on somebody else's reflection
that it be "altruistic". My comment is:"huh? _altruistic_?". Because IMO this
adjective does not fit at all. I don't mean to say he's some opportunist or
anything, read it and make up your mind if you will, I only mean to say that he
does what he does for precise reasons that represent a choice, a response to
events of his life, much like real people do, and that goes for most of the Eva
characters. And in particular, this choice of him in the manga is not anywhere
near to altruistic, I'd rather call it self-centered.
