Not being in Gainax, I can't tell. But I'd go with saying that no, they were
not. Each of them offers a specific and self-relevant occasion for exploiting
some interpersonal relationships and indepths of each character, or the occasion
to learn more about the background of the story. The former is the main part,
since the relationships tend to be symbolizations of Anno's take in that
respect, during and after his depression.
