[EVA] "Useful/Useless" Manga Question (for Bochan, technically)

I found very interesting the fact that Gendou would speak to Shinji at the
beginning of the Dummy-vs-Bardiel battle, even more so for what he said, calling
Shinji "you useless pilot".

My question is, is this the same way he referred to Shinji when he said, either
in tv ep.1 and in manga #1, that the replacement pilot was useless?If so, would
you say he purposedly reused the same word, or that Sadamoto made him do so?
Since Gendou and Shinji's relationship had definately cracked years before when
the sooner had said the latter was a useless son, I'm wondering if this has all
been set up so that Shinji autonomously reconsiders his usefulness when he
returns to fight Zeruel.
