    I personally think its a matter of the main force behind the series. In the TV
series, Anno was in charge, and he seemed to have more of an affinity for Asuka
than Rei. In the manga, Sadamoto seems to be leaning more towards Rei.

    I think its more to do with the preferences of the creator projecting their
personality onto Shinji and then assigning the partner (the most applicable term I
could think of) to him.
