(Please don't flame me).

First of all, I denounce Anno & Gainax's statement that the Eva movies
are the true ending. This was said, and they were made for commercial,
not artistic reasons & therefore IMOO are disqualified for that reason.

In the TV series, episodes 25 - 26, Shinji created a world where
everyone died, so he could be left alone. Remember Misato told him, it
was his own doing. As you know he was reasoned/persuaded to change his
perspective and episode #26 had a happy ending of sorts.

The Eva movies IMOO, are the story of how the world ended, as he wanted,
at the end of #25, from which where he reversed his decision in #26.
(Naturally just Shinkji and Asuka remain, and she is tender to him. It
is *his* fantasy, there is the untold bit afterwards though) . The death
stills of Misato and Ritsuko, Gendou talking to Rei all fit in before
Shinji changes his mind.

That is how I see the Eva story and fit *all* together to still have a
happy ending. So sue me! :)

The TV episodes differ from the movies on 2 major points of omission. 1)
No JSSDF/Seele interference allowing 2) The HI project to begin
uninterrupted. Thus all the psychology can slot in too.

Finally, if Shinji can re-shape as well as destroy the world, he can
bring back Kaji and Yui as well.

OK, I expect my own Eva ending is not perfect, but there it is!
