I wanted to make sure I got a copy with the DVD box to
hold the series :)

I don't think any DVD could realistically be much more
than a complex fansub (with better quality) in its
presentation of the main material. If the company
tried text overlays I'm sure a lot of fans would
complain ;P

Ultimately, I guess, no, it's not something new, but
it's apparent that a lot of effort has gone into it.
In that sense, it perhaps raises the bar on what
Western anime DVDs should aim to be:
- alternate angles for OP, ED, title screen, eyecatch
(generally just English credits or titles);
- options for on-screen text subtitles or not (and
there's a huge amount of text to translate and
position - if you've ever tried to fansub the series,
you'll know what a pain all that text is);
- alternate angle for next episode preview where they
get two of the US voice actresses to replace the
seiyuu for Tsukino and Kano;
- Spanish as well as English dub and text language
options (not that I understand Spanish) (and of course
Japanese soundtrack as well);
- six episodes on the DVD :)
If they just improved the graininess of the picture
quality, it would be a perfect DVD :)
