I assume the basic principle is "because-we-said-so-ium", a very 
powerful compound that has the amazing quality of doing what the 
writers need.

See also how a blast is capable of OPENING UP THE GEOFRONT in 
Rebirth/EoE, but simply makes a kaboom that Shinji can stand within 
unaided vision range of and not get hurt... Shinji had to survive 
that blast, but they needed to have the Geofront open to air for the 
purposes of the movie plot...
