I was thinking of Shinji and Kaji during the fight with the 14th 
angel. Rei comes up, and she's close enough that he can see A) she's 
missing an arm, and I believe that B) he sees the N2 mine in her 
other arm. ("If you can read this, you're too close.")

Considering that I don't think Rei would bother using a low-yield 
device, by all rights he should be vapor. But that doesn't work for 
the story, so...
