Dramaturgic, meaning of or related to the art of theatrical composition.

That aside, the purpose as I understand it is to make the audience think
about themselves.

If i recall correctly that scene is intercut with footage of actual
telephone poles and such things at evangelion-like angles, as if to remind
the audience of the distance between fantasy and reality.

Or maybe it's just because self-referential art is hip these last 40 years
or so.  Whatever.
