I forgot to attach something to the last e-mail, so...
This is a translation of a book review that appeared in the local newspaper a few
days ago. It is a bit off-topic, but something to think about when you hear
people arguing about who is better -- Asuka vs. Rei -- or if you find yourself
fantasizing over them (or just about any other anime/manga character). :P

"Men who are Unable to Experience (Natural) Love"
     -by Hayami Yukiko

Lolita Complex is the "National Disease"

DV (Domestic violence) men, stalkers, dirty old men... "Self-centered men
who are unable to escape from the wave of infantilism that is on the rise
throughout Japan" appear one after another in this book, but most of the pages
are devoted to 'Lolita complex men'.
"Lolita complex refers to people who are unable to outgrow their
infantilism, and thus cannot form interpersonal relationships on an equal basis.
Psychiatric specialists estimate that some half of Japanese men have 'latent
Lolita complexes', and these immature men are unable to truly experience
(natural) love. For a woman with a healthy psyche, the current Japan is pretty
boring."
This book offers in-depth analysis of meticulous investigations of men in a
wide range of age groups from junior high school students to middle-aged and
elderly men, and provides women with a road map for escaping from this type of
barren love.
"What made me first view the Lolita Complex men as "disgusting" was when I
chanced upon a man taking photographs of preschool children in their gym clothes
on the preschool playground. He was taking photographs from the cover of a car,
and would hide when someone came along. I felt so disgusted I was almost sick."
"Lolita complex usually comes as a set with a Mother (Oedipus) complex, and
is reproduced within the home. Men who have been raised by mothers who care for
all their needs are unable to break free from the feelings that 'adult women
equal domineering mothers, and they are the dominated children.' It is so
pervasive that most anime heroines even have childish faces and sexy adult
bodies. It is a "National Disease" that has taken root as a part of our
culture."
     And so on...
