Did you ever read the comics when you were younger? Sure,
from the adult's perspective the toy-based origins become
painfully apparent but they still did a hell of a job with
the stories and constraints they had to work with. When
Hasbro came out with new action figures they retired older
ones. "You can't have them in the comic anymore, use the
new toys," said Hasbro. So the editor crafted a gritty
story that involved the deaths of all those "retired"
characters. Hasbro was aghast.

If you don't like it, that's fine. What was cool was the
effort put into constructing backstories, dynamics between
characters, putting touches of realism into the stories.
It was shocking, the same way Robotech was shocking when I
was just a wee lad. When Roy Fokker died, I was shocked.
People don't die in cartoons! Same with Ben Dixon. Very
big gut punch.

Not really. A fanfic author can work for artistic
satisfaction. An anime requires buttloads of cash to put
together. If someone doesn't pony up the financing then
the anime doesn't get amde. Making an anime is a constant
struggle to balance the compromise between artistic vision
and fiscal necesity.
