[EVA] to tangent or not to tangent?

Maybe I'm just being different here, but when I was writing fanfics 
back in the day, I saw them as a the perfect device to get into 
character's mind. Its sort of like an actor studying a subject who they 
are portraying, so that they can figure out what's going on in their 
mind. When you write a fanfics (well, a real fanfic, not a slash, yaoi, 
POS,) you need to try to understand the character in order to get them 
right. So, IMHO, a good fanfic can explain a character as well as any 
discussion here.
