It'd be a mistake to assume that, just because an anime is aimed at
kids, it's not "serious". Digimon was always more angst-filled and
complex than your average children's show, with a lot of the
characters trying to deal with dysfunctional home lives and such.
Season 3 (Tamers) is particular interesting for Eva fans, since the
head writer was Chiaki Konaka, who also did serial experiment lain.
As I understand it, he's a big Eva fan, so Digimon Tamers, like lain,
is heavily influenced by Eva. (The visuals are particularly telling
in this regard - the scene where Juri/Jeri is running towards her
sick mother in a flashback is very reminiscent of Asuka's running
scene; there's at least one of those 'character looking up directly
into an overhead camera so their face looks sort of distorted' shots
with Takato (cf. Shinji... I forget where that scene is; also lain
had some weird overhead angle shots); etc.)
