Depends on what you call modern.  How about:
Cowboy Bebop
Lain
KareKano
Ghost in the Shell

I can't name too many because many of the animes I watch are comedies, or I
can't think of their names right now, or they might not be that new.  I
wouldn't say there aren't *any*.
