I watched my EoE R1 on a Pioneer DV340 PAL/NTSC multi-region. R1
default setting. Ordinary stereo TV.
The Japanese track was selectable through Top Menu accessing only (menu
access after play had started)
Once Japanese had been selected I chose Japanese stereo, then in the
next menu, "English subtitles and titles".
As I had seen the subtitled Manga VHS EoE just before, I found the
subtitling on Manga's DVD disappointing for the following reasons;
The sub VHS version has all dialogue translated, background &
foreground. Some subtitles appear at the top in smaller font, some part
way down to right or left.
The DVD subtitles only had subtitles, sometimes italiscised, at the
bottom. There was no translation of background dialogue.
To give an example; Misato tells Maya that Asuka should be put in Eva 02
and then they should be launched into the lake, & then proceeds to give
orders to Hyuga. When Misato speaks to Hyuga, Maya is giving orders to
NERV personnel in the background. On the VHS, Maya's instructions are
subtitled, & they are translated placed on top of the picture, but no
subtitles appear anywhere on my DVD version.
Radioed reports coming in to HQ are also untranslated on the DVD, but
are there on the VHS.
As a variation, when Asuka is in Eva 02 at the bottom of the lake saying
"I don't want to die", and her mother's voice starts talking to her, her
mother's words are italiscised subtitles at the bottom of the picture
replacing what she is saying (at the same time). In the VHS version,
Asuka's speech subtitles continue to be shown at the bottom *but* her
mother's subtitles are shown along the top of the picture as well.
Subtitle: English 1 does not work at all, it switches the subtitles off,
Only English 2 gives subtitles.
The DVD has no Japanese dialogue for the last conversation Ritsuko has
with Gendou until she says "liar". Only background music is on. The
conversation *was* on my VHS version however.
Layer change is as others have found, where the picture stutters as Rei
says "tadama".
The bedroom scene with Misato & Kaji, has Asuka's comments up to &
including "...2 grown-ups licking their wounds" very faint (still on
ordinary Japanese stereo). Fine on the VHS. Ditto some of the speech in
the conversational scenes when Shinji inside Eva 01 is "inside" Lilith.
I don't know how many of the DVD faults (as I see them) have been
"cured" on Madman's R4 EoE version, but would like to know if someone
else on this ML has one. Until then, I'm exchanging back my EoE R1 for a
duplicate VHS. The VHS video quality was almost as good as the DVD on my
Panasonic VCR with 4x amorphous heads.
