Stage 50 - To Within [One's] Heart

Cover: Misato looking back over her left shoulder with her Nerv jacket off her shoulders exposing a Nerv
harness with a typical military flak harness "X" back.

Scene: Shinji standing naked in what appears to be an underwater scene (with fish) resembling the
aquarium in Stage 33
Subtitle: Shinji floating on waves of consciousness...
Shinji (thinking): I wonder how long it has been... How long I wonder how long I will be here?
(Shinji sees another person - a naked female resembling Rei, yet somehow different. The person draws
closer.
Shinji: Who...?
Person: Come here, Shinji.
Shinji: Mother...?
Yui: You've grown up so much... so adult now.
Shinji: Mother...Where have you been until now? I was so sad/hurt when you disappeared so suddenly. Why
didn't you come back?
Yui (drawing nearer): I've been here the whole time, waiting for you. I knew that you would come. There's
no need to worry any more. We'll always be together from now on, Shinji.
(Yui catches Shinji in an embrace)
Shinji: But, I... I have to go back. I have to go back and pilot Eva. I have to pilot Eva and fight our
enemies. I have to fight and win.
(The two sink to a kneeling pose, facing each other)
Yui: No, you have done enough. You have fought enough for everyone's sake, and have arrived here hurt...
bruised and torn in both body and mind. So you don't need to go back any more. You can just stay here
forever, Shinji.
(Yui lays Shinji back and he closes his eyes)

Scene: Gendo sitting in Dummy Plug room with hands clasped in front of mouth ("Gendo pose"). Rei, naked
and dripping from the LCL tube, approaches.
Rei: Aren't you going to go to Eva-01?
Gendo (pushing up glasses and standing): ... Everything is in the hands of Dr. Akagi. There is no need
for me to go.
(Gendo takes a bathrobe from the back of the chair where he was sitting and places it around Rei)
Rei: What will happen to Ikari-kun?
Gendo: No-one knows yet. Possibly the only one that knows is the Eva itself.
(A silent moment passes between the two, then Gendo reaches out to cup Rei's face with his right hand.
Rei starts when the hand touches her face, and reflexively knocks Gendo's hand away.)
Gendo: Rei...
Rei: Please excuse me.
(Rei turns abruptly and walks away, clutching the bathrobe around her)
(Gendo stares silently after her)
Rei (thinking): I don't really understand myself. Inside of me there has always been an empty void like I
was a straw figure. And this cavity sometimes scares me, makes me uneasy. I felt that I could fill this
void by thinking of (yearning for) Commander Ikari. But before I knew it, Ikari-kun was there.
(flashbacks of Rei's interactions with Shinji) I thought he would not be able to get over the incident
with Suzuhara, but he came back and saved us. Ikari-kun... come back - you mustn't stay there!

Scene: Eva-01 in cage, staff in Command Center
Announcement: Insertion of all probe needles completed.
Announcement: Electromagnetic waveform locked at zero minus three.

 Status: All Green)
Maya: Ego boundary pulse connections complete.
Ritsuko: Affirmative
(Misato watches nervously but silently)
Rutsuko: Salvage start!
Makoto: Transmitting 1st signal.
Shigeru: Eva has received the signal. No rejection reaction. Continue with transmission of 2nd and 3rd
signals!
Makoto: No problems with target catechesis.
Misato (thinking): Shinji... Shinji

Scene: Shinji's internal world
(Naked Shinji floating in liquid/LCL. Behind him Yui kneels over a prone and sleeping Shinji, while
before him an apparition of Misato appears)
Shinji: Misato...
Misato: Shinji, your existence is no longer yours alone. You are an Eva pilot, and we have no choice but
to entrust our future to you.
(Other apparitions appear one after another)
Ritsuko: Yes, you must fight. We cannot afford to lose you now.
Kaji: That's right, fight. You mustn't run away. You must not turn your eyes from the truth.
Gendo: Fight! The struggle for the fate of humankind needs no cowards!
Asuka: Fight! We are specially chosen people! We have to beat the Angels!
Mixed voices: Only Evangelion can overcome the Angels and save humankind from Third Impact.
Shinji: Shut up! No! No!! I've done enough! I don't want to fight anymore!!
(Yui smiles over the prone Shinji)
Shinji (covering ears): I'm here! And I can stay here forever!!

Scene: Command Center
(Screen: Warning - REFUSED)
Maya: It's no good! The pulse is fixed in a loop!
Ritsuko: Try irradiating all waveform bands in all azimuths!

Maya: Negative!
Ritsuko: The transmission signal is caught in a Kline space!
Misato: What does that mean!?
Ritsuko (staring in shock): It means we've failed...
Misato: !!
Operator: The Eva is rejecting the signals!
Operator: The plug internal pressure is rising!
Ritsuko: Abort operations! Shut off the power!
Maya: Negative! The plug is being ejected!
(The plug ejects and opens, spilling out LCL)
Misato (screaming): Shinji!!
(Rei looks on in shock)
(LCL spills over the floor with Shinji's school uniform)
Rei (thinking): Ikari-kun - don't you intend to come back? (looks at Shinji's school uniform on the
floor) No... there is still a chance.
(Rei grasps the railing in front of her and closes her eyes)
Rei (thinking/praying): Ikari-kun, come back. (superimposed image of Yui standing and holding a prone
Shinji) I don't want to go back to being a straw figure any more.
(The Yui image raises its hands and clutches at its head in pain/distress, and the skin starts to melt
off the face. Shinji opens his eyes and looks up to see not his mother holding him, but the armor-less
figure of the Eva with glowing eyes and numerous tubes leading out of it.
