Clarification: It's not that I don't see that the 14th angel is the
mightiest seen until his appearance and his codename, Zeruel, is that of the
"angel of might"; and it hasn't escaped me the fact that some scenes of
Magokoro wo kimi ni can be interpreted as if they had been directed with
some notions from judaic mysticism in mind. But Eva is a story about people,
and how the ability to relate to each other describes, shapes and therefore
creates reality around these people, and many other things that make - in
essence - what Director Anno wanted to say after his depression, and what
conclusions he had reached, using a medium like anime. The main reason for
the Judo-Christian imagery _is_ the exotic effect on a Japanese public, and
the coolness it could offer (cross-shaped explosions and the like). There
really is no reason to think they were used as anything else than cosmetics
for the story. Considering that in Japanese culture appearance has its own,
self-contained dignity, and needs not a reason coming from the plot, the
religious elements in Eva cannot be taken into any further account without
adding something the author didn't put in.
