[EVA] Eva DVDs and Image shaking

this is a problem that ADV sought to "correct" in the original release of
DVD 1, which led to some really weird-looking frozen scenes and, iirc,
losing a bit of the edge around the entire picture.

this is a problem with the original masters. it is present on all DVDs of
the series, including the japanese releases. it has something to do with the
way the film elements were handled but i'm not entirely clear on how it
happens.

if you want to see evangelion on DVD, it's something you're going to have to
get used to. it isn't a problem exclusive to evangelion, either. people have
complained about it in shoujo kakumei utena, as well. according to one
poster on the anime on DVD forums, it's easier to spot on LD/DVD than VHS
because of the increased detail and resolution. i noticed it sometimes even
on the tapes -- i think it's easy to notice because the subtitles stand
still while the picture moves a bit.
