If Rei is only a tool to Gendo, why rush down and open the hatch?  After 
all, he's got a whole tank of Rei's in the basement, why ruch down and risk 
injury?  To use your carpenter analogy, do you think a carpenter would risk 
injury to pull a hammer out of a fire if he had 20 identical hammers safely 
tucked away?
