i would also argue that this is a possible cirumstance of eva being written 
as it goes along. the whole rei-gendo relationship just.. doesn't seem to 
jibe with rei later on. like, shinji sees rei smiling and talking to gendo 
early on, but that's almost impossible for me to believe later on in the 
series. espcially since by the time we hit namida, it's shiji who's teaching 
her how to feel. but i wouldn't let it bother me. =) i think gendo in the 
episode pulling open the hatch was actually worried about rei. he was like, 
freaking out. it's hard to suggest he was just putting on an act, i think.
