[EVA] Question about Birth Days

Is there any special reason to why she was released out of the tank just 
then? I guess her growth was accelerated, but why would Gendou need her 
when she was 5? Why couldn't she have matured in the tank until she was 
old enough to become a pilot? I guess we're up to speculation now, since 
the series never really gives a reason... Rei just is there from the 
beginning somehow.
