My own theory is that Rei (I, in this case) is an angel (the second
possibly).

If you remember the anime, Rei 1's taunts "brainstormed" Naoko
(psychelic colors) as Asuka was attacked psychically later on (also
psychedelic colours).

The angel attack from Rei on Naoko, pushed her to hot bloded
infanticide, and then self destruction. Naoko was a rational, cold
blooded, scheming woman. Although jealous (& may have "arranged" Yui's
accident - she would not have even told Ritsuko), her killing of Rei 1 &
then herself seems to me like induced action, rather than just reaction
to a child.

Remember she was in a good mood just having has a mother to daughter
talk with Ritsuko.
