I have no idea, but "better" is subjective. They may
very well be ensuring that the Japanese release *is*
superior than overseas because it leaves everything
the way it was seen in theaters. Or, this was a new
decision and they decided to re-edit for overseas.

I don't know where this rumor started, but it's false.
Check Gainax's website, Box 3 contained DEATH(true)^2
& REBIRTH, the original edit of Death has never been
released officially on video *anywhere*.

I agree somewhat, but I must confess I do kind of like
the novelty of how they released the films and how
much they continue to tinker with Eva. It's fun, imho.
