[EVA] A-Kon 13 & Manga's End of Eva Dub

Last weekend I attended A-kon 13 in Dallas, TX. It
was the first anime convention I had ever attended
(living in Vermont there aren't many conventions
nearby :-/), and let me tell you this:

Otaku smell.

My god. The elevator rides felt like an experiment in
biochemical warfare.

But enough off topic. On saturday night I packed
myself into a small theatre to watch the End of
Evangelion for the first time. Well, the first time
on a big screen, anyway. I crammed myself on the
floor in between some other otaku who didn't get
chairs, and snuggled with my little Trigun kitty
plushie (they were going for $4 by the last day and
they're soooo cute!) to watch. To think we got GOOD
seats compared to the people who didn't get there
early. There were people crammed along the wall and
in the aisles and in the back, maximum occupancy fire
codes be damned.

I was expecting a fansub, or even a raw version (I
can't believe they showed Jungle Guu raw; I had forced
all my friends to go see it because its of its
hilarious-ness, just to have them scratching their
heads and asking where the subs were). But to my
surprise the folks at A-kon showed the Manga
Entertainment dub. Which, as far as I know, no one
else has seen yet. :) (Aside from the French at least
^_^)

Anyway, just thought I would share a few brief
thoughts, and then I will return to my lurker cave,
never to be heard from again.

(Please remember, my opinions on the dub are just
opinions and nothing else.)

My first impression was that the acting was toned down
a little. At least Shinji and Asuka were. He sounded
less awkward and whiney than the ADV dubs. Maybe
because of the more depressed tone of the movie?
Shinji's several screams throughout the movie though,
were ear-piercing. O_o But then I recall they were
like that in the japanese too.

That's about all the difference I saw between the ADV
dub "style" and the Manga dub. Other than that, it
was pretty much the same as the ADV dubs. The Nerv
faculty (Maya & co) still feel the need to shout their
lines on every occassion and the VA for Ritsuko was
just painful when she tried to act. The VAs for Maya
and Fuyitski were noticably changed but the acting
quality didn't seem any better/worse to me.

Translations. There were some slight translation
discrepances (from the fan scripts and subs I've seen)
throughout the minor dialogue in the movie. But
nothing major that I noticed.

And finally:
Shinji's gooey hand scene: "I'm so fucked up" (there
was a round of applause for this line)
Asuka's final line: "How disgusting"

Seems they went for the less literal but more
connotative translation for Asuka's last line.

*returns to lurking*
