The movie happened. During the events we see in the movie, everyone had to
confront with themselves and the others and decide whether to live on or loose
themselves into nothingness, although a central role was given to Shinji
specifically. Shinji and Asuka are apparently the first ones that have chosen to
live on facing reality and what pain it can bring in hopes of also finding
happiness, and they have done so because they have accepted the possibility of
reaching out for others and being sought. However this is not a painless and
immediate process and their reactions during that scene are immediate proof of
this, yet also prove that they have some commitment to it. Asuka's reaction is
not what I'd call "passive", it may not be the lash-out you figure above, but
that was part of her shield against the others, so it'd be out of place here.
