Downbeat and negative is only the half of it. I really don't care what
people think - I hate all the "canon" endings, although the TV ending is
a little bit better. Too bad they couldn't pull it off better - the
animation really grates after a while. Many of the fanfics are much,
much better...

Speaking of fanfics, there are several fics out there with _very_
interesting initial precepts, but which dissapoint when you read them
through, based on either execution of the story, or simply technically
bad writing. Examples being "Home", which moved too rapidly to the big
fight, and "Shinji's Decision", which _really_ suffers from a deficiency
in the "show, don't tell" department. Is it considered acceptable to
start out from someone else's initial idea? Am I allowed to "improve" -
or try to, anyway - someone else's story? I'd be thankful for an answer
