It all boils down to what Anno wanted to show. And Anno wanted to show that he
had gotten out of depression, out of his shell. That it hadn't become all rosy
and pinky for him, but he had made it. And that this didn't mean he had become
all of a sudden a better person. All of this is reflected in the movie. The
"interpretation" thing can go only as much as it doesn't counter this
fundamental truth.

Yui says they can do it. Her role makes her the most trustworthy of sources.
That doesn't mean people will all of a sudden be better than before.
